What Are Your Small Business Goals for 2017?
"Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results"
Can you believe it’s 2017?
Where is time going?
At the start of a new year, lots of people set themselves resolutions for the year ahead; very few people however stick to them for more than a few days!
Why is this?
The main reason is ‘lack of desire’.
The reality is that people set their New Year resolutions without any real desire to achieve the results they would like in a perfect world.
For example, people state they’ll give up smoking or lose weight because they know they should. But in reality they know deep down that the pain of giving up cigarettes or dieting is greater than their own desire to be smoke free or slimmer.
They simply don’t want the results enough!
Their desire only becomes greater than the pain of taking action when the potential loss of not doing so increases. For example if a doctor tells a smoker that they will die in months if they don’t give, then the desire to give up becomes much greater than the pain of giving up, and so the goal is much more likely to be achieved.
The same principles apply to you and your small business.
You may tell people you want to grow your business. You may have started 2017 with the intention of doubling your sales. But, if the effort in actually doing it is greater than your real desire to achieve better results, then you’ll soon be back to being content with achieving the same results as you did in 2016.
What can you do to increase your own desire?
The first thing I strongly suggest you do is grab a piece of paper and start writing down all of the things you’d like to see and do in life; all of the things you’d like to own and the debts you’d like to pay off.
Writing down any goals in life, whether personal or business is an important step towards actually achieving them.
When you write your goals down and read them back your mind becomes more focused on achieving them. Reading them every day will really focus you. Very few people do this and that’s why they never achieve their goals because they simply lose focus.
The chances are that when you have achieved something in your life you did it by having some level of plan written down to give you direction.
For example when you started your business or when you moved house in the past, you probably wrote lists of tasks that had to be done to make it happen?
Keeping a diary in which you write down daily the tasks that you need to do to move you towards your goals can massively accelerate your progress and results.
Writing down and regularly reading your goals increases your desire to achieve them; it focuses your mind on the real benefits that will result from your efforts.
You don't have to be Einstein to write a simple business plan!
Your ‘business plan’ does not have to be complex, it can be really simple. What are your goals and what do you need to do to achieve them.
Once you have a written list of actions you need to take you have a plan that will keep you focused. Break those actions down in to daily tasks that you can cross off as you complete them and you’ll be amazed by what you can achieve.
Now if you want better results for your business in 2017, then one thing is for sure.
You need to do things differently!
Doing the same things day in day out as you did in 2016 will just get you the same results.
When you write down your goals, the actions you need to take to achieve them need to be different to those you were taking last year. You either need to find ways of doing more of what you did or find alternate ways of doing things. But you can’t just carry on as you did last year and expect better results.
So if you haven’t already, spend a few minutes today writing down your goals as I described above. Use them to increase your desire to grow your business.
